Cahokia Mounds
Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site is a U.S. National Historic Landmark and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a very special place with great history. There are lots of opportunities to learn more about the community that lived here. However, there are several questions that continue to be unanswered. At one time, there were over 120 mounds. Not all of the remaining mounds are protected and within the park, but you can see many when you visit. Monk’s Mound is the largest, and it is well worth the many steps to see the views from the top. From what we have gathered from our visits, most of the mounds were built to elevate structures that were built on top of the mounds, and at least one was a burial mound. The site is large, and there are many trails so you could spend quite a lot of time here exploring.
