Missouri Wineries

Missouri has an abundance of wineries with eleven recognized wine trails. We have explored the wine trails closest to St. Louis as day trips or weekend trips. Not all wineries are part of the recognized trails, but they are also worth exploring as well. One of our favorite weekend day trips is pairing a winery with nearby hiking.

Hermann Wine Trail

Hermann is a historic and beautiful German settled town. The best part about visiting this region is the hop on hop off trolley that takes you to many of the local wineries and distilleries. There are many great places to stay in town as this is a cute, touristy area. We have visited this area the most on multiple occasions.

Adam Putcha Winery – This is our favorite Hermann winery, and it is a trolley stop. The atmosphere is amazing, and they have a wonderful outdoor space. They offer a good variety of wines, wine slushies, food, and occasionally live music. Plus, they have cats roaming around the property that are fun to pet!

Hermannhof Winery – This winery is in town so you can walk there if staying nearby, but it is also a trolley stop. The winery is a historic building, and there is a great patio. There is a small, self-guided cellar tour that is informative and neat.

Oak Glenn Winery – The views at this winery are amazing. They have a huge patio overlooking the river. This is a trolley stop.

Stone Hill Winery – This is another great trolley stop. The winery was established in the mid 1800’s making it the oldest in Missouri. It is very historic and beautiful. They offer tours which are fun and informative. The tasting room is one of the best in the area. We enjoy many of their wines.

G. Husmann - This is a newer Hermann winery located in town. It is named after George Husmann who was integral to the start of Missouri’s wine industry and Hermann.

Dierberg, Star Lane, Three Saints - This winery offers dry wine from California and is located in town.

Endless Summer Winery – They offer delicious fruit wines. The outdoor area is pretty with a front garden that was in full bloom during our August visit, and we saw so many butterflies. It is one of our favorite wineries. It is located outside of town.

Some other great places to go in Hermann: Tin Mill Brewery, Cooper Mule Distillery, Blackshire Distillery, and Doxie Slush

Augusta Wine Trail

Noboleis Vinyards Augusta Missouri

We have visited more wineries in the Augusta region than any other region as it is the closest to St. Louis. Depending on where you are in the St. Louis region, this could be a day trip or an overnight trip if you want to experience more of the area. We have stayed in Augusta for a few nights and have enjoyed ourselves.

Augusta is a cute, small town. Klondike Park is a pretty park to get in some nature. If you want more nature, the Katy Trail goes through Augusta so you can ride bikes or hike as well as visiting wineries. If you want an alternative or addition to the wineries, Good News Brewery has two locations in this area along the Katy Trail in Defiance and Augusta.

We have visited all the recognized wineries on the Augusta Wine Trail. These include Augusta Winery, Balducci Vineyards, Montelle Winery, Mount Pleasant Estates, and Noboleis Vineyards. Near Augusta, we have also enjoyed visiting Chandler Hill Vineyards, Bleumenhof Vineyards & Winery, and Holy Grail Winery. All the wineries in this region are great in their own way and have something special to offer. Many of the wineries in this region offer beautiful views along with their delicious wine.

Route Du Vin – Ste. Genevieve

Three of the recognized wineries on the Route Du Vin trail that we have visited are Cave Vineyard, Charleville Winery, and Sand Creek Vineyard. All the wineries are great. Cave Vineyard is one of the most unique wineries we have ever been to since you can actually drink your wine in the cave. It is such a cool experience.

Nearby the Route Du Vin Trail is St. Francois Winery. They also have a brewery for those who prefer an alternative or addition to wine. We went to this winery after exploring nearby Saint Joe State Park and the Missouri Mines State Historic Site.

Other wonderful parks in this area that we have explored are Hawn State Park, Saint Francois State Park, Pickle Springs Natural Area, and Hickory Canyons Natural Area. Pairing a park and a winery makes for a great day trip.

Meramec River Wine Trail – Near Rolla and St. James

The only winery in this region that is still open that we have been to is St. James Winery. We have been to others, but they all seem to be permanently or temporarily closed now except for Peaceful Bend which we have not been to yet.

St. James is an amazing winery, and we have been there many times when we lived in Rolla. We also drink their delicious, affordable wines often at home as they are available at many stores around St. Louis. St. James Winery produces a huge variety of wine with their fruit wines being our favorite. They also have whites and reds with varying sweetness. This is an award winning winery with knowledgeable staff and lots of variety! Next to the winery is Public House Brewery which is an awesome brewery.

Near St. Louis

While the following wineries are not part of a recognized trail, these wineries are located very close to South St. Louis: Persimmon Ridge Vineyards, LaChance Vineyards, and Old Farm Winery.

Persimmon Ridge Vineyards is an amazing winery with great wines. They often have music, and in the fall, they have mulled wine which is so good! They make one of the only persimmon wines in existence in the US, and we have to say it is delicious!

LaChance Vineyards has a nice selection of wines. They have another location in Kimmmswick, Mo located near The Blue Owl which has delicious pie! The levee high apple pie is a must try! Both LaChance locations occasionally have good, live music and are fun places.

Old Farm Winery is a small, but really good winery near Don Robinson State Park. We paired a trip to the park with a tasting at the winery. The winery offers a good variety, and we had a lovely chat with the owner.
