Southeastern Missouri

State Parks of Southeastern Missouri

Southeastern Missouri is the most beautiful area of Missouri in our opinion. There are wonderful state parks and other places to go to take in the beauty.

Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park

Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park main feature is a rocky river making it a natural waterpark. It is a short walk to get to the river. This area is so fun, and the water is so clear. There are whirlpools and small waterfalls everywhere. You can slide down some of them. River shoes, water shoes, or something similar are highly recommended as the rocks are very slippery. It is a river so be mindful of the current. There are areas that are deeper too that are perfect for swimming. This is a very popular park so arrive as early as you can for the best experience. If you are interested in venturing out of this busy part of the park, there are also great hiking trails.

Caster River Shut-Ins is an alternative to Johnson’s Shut-Ins that is not as busy. It is a gorgeous place and the river is just as clear. Plus, Caster River Shut-Ins are pink granite boulders. Like Johnson’s Shut-Ins, you need to wear river shoes or something similar and be careful on the rocks. The park is smaller, but it is just as fun (or more fun!)  without the crowds.

Elephant Rocks State Park

Elephant Rocks is an incredible and unique park in Missouri. You can climb on or hike around giant, granite rocks. The main trail is paved, but you can explore the side trails as well.  It is a choose your own adventure park, and it is a blast!

Taum Sauk Mountain State Park

Taum Sauk Mountain State Park has pretty trails and a gorgeous overlook. The park includes the highest elevation point in Missouri. The plaque for this is very easy to get to from the parking lot and is in a forested area. Please note that the peak is forested, but do not be disappointed with a lack of view. There are other places to see beautiful overlooks in the park. Mina Sauk Falls Trail is a popular trail and features a waterfall after rainfall.

Onondaga Cave State Park

Onondaga Cave State Park offers guided tours of this awesome cave. The tour guides are informative and entertaining! The cave features amazing formations and pretty water. It is a gem of Missouri and a stunning cave to explore.
